The first birthday is such a major milestone, not just for baby, but for the parents too! If you are celebrating your first baby’s first birthday you are also celebrating the first year of being a parent, and let’s be real…it was a year! And a first birthday cake smash photo session is a great way to celebrate!
I was happy to document this special milestone for this family as I also photographed their maternity and newborn sessions as well, so to see this little miss at one years old was a treat for me. I love seeing how my families grow!
Mom wanted to keep it easy so we took the photos right outside their home at a nearby park. The weather hadn’t been cooperating for us so we had to pivot and get the session done in between nap times and it worked out great.
The theme and vision for this session was pink and girly. The custom made balloon arch was a perfect accent and backdrop for this type of session, adding just enough “pizzaz” without being too much. The matching cake was the perfect addition.
When I photograph first birthday milestones I like to make sure I get photos with mom and dad too. Like I mentioned before, it’s a special milestone for parents too. Since a cake smash was involved in this session we did the “clean” photos first and moved on to the messier photos for the end.
Baby girl was a little skeptical at first of the cake but once she got a taste of the sugar she was more curious and had some fun “smashing” the cake.
